Quickie VRED images from a speedform model I'm working on.  The initial model was inspired from "stiletto" style concepts from the 60's and 70's era and I developed it into this at the moment with a small sketchover for some line and surface changes.  The idea here is to do a few of these as a means for developing new form ideas.  I will continue to do updates and show new models as they evolve.

     This is a quick model of a pair of headphones I purchased about a month ago.  They are a pair of Grado open ear SR 80e's and cost about $100.  Grado is an interesting company that is based in Brooklyn, New York and is "wholey" American; very rare these days.
     They boast a hand made approach and corporate loyalty among it's employees which I feel is essential to a good product.  They don't spend a lot of money on advertising in any way shape or form, even the box is plain jane.  The manufacturing is very basic and somewhat utilitarian much like the "Jeep" of headphones.  The upside is that they sound incredibly well and have a lot of bang for the buck and from a design perspective have a efficient Teutonic approach.
     This model is essentially a "package" model to help with proportions and was done in a couple of hours in Alias and rendered in Autodesk VRED.  Most of the time was spent measuring the Grado's as I wanted to be somewhat accurate.  Not sure if I'll redesign these or something new.  Look for some loose empathic sketches soon.  Enjoy!- Dave

This image is really more about art expression into another possible evolution in design for automobiles.  There are so many things that are happening in other fields that are aiming toward this “flowing cubist” or “flowing faceted” approach to design.  Computers are allowing designers to experiment with a combination of broad shapes combined with a high level of detail not every seen before.  Surfacing and detail that is changing from circular to square and everything in between.  This is new for me and something I will be experimenting more with.  Enjoy!- Dave Smith for www.onesevenstudios.com and of course 4WRD-Motion.
